I have not been gravitating towards prints in my sewing practice for some time now, favouring solids and subtlety instead. But last week was a sombre one and I think perhaps I chose this very bold print from @lowry_fabrics new collection in a subconscious attempt to brighten (quite literally) things up a little bit. When I saw this fabric I was immediately compelled to make a new #theforsythedress , which is weird because I haven’t sewn one of them in years. To be quite honest I have a bit of a complicated relationship with this pattern actually. Well not with the actual ‘fit’ of the pattern, but more the amateurish instructions and layout of it. The Forsythe was my very first pattern and I was so extremely green (I mean I still have no idea what I’m doing but then I was truly clueless, having only just discovered indie sewing patterns) and nowadays I often think that I really need to back and re-do the instructions etc. Then again I also don’t want to lose that time that could be spent working on new designs. Time, or the lack thereof, often seems to be an insurmountable hurdle in my pattern-making pursuits.

I’ve just printed out what I hope to be the last edits of this shorts pattern and am about to sew up (hopefully) a final pair before I finish off instructions and get ready to test. I’ve also been working on this very basic button up shirt - nothing exciting to see here, but I seem to been kind of gravitating toward seeking simplicity in all aspects of my life right now (too much going on in this world for anything complicated, clothing included) and a basic button up shirt and simple shorts just feel like a very ‘real’ representation of how I find myself attempting to navigate this crazy world. I guess, at the end of the day, that’s what I aim for this craft / creative outlet to be; a self-expression of sorts. Even if what I seem to be subconsciously expressing is that I don’t really have anything significant to say right now.
I’m not big on birthdays, or at least not big on my birthday so much, but I do see them as an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed, and on what I hope to achieve in the year ahead. In my youth I doubted that I would be overly concerned about getting older and, as I enter the last year of my 30’s I can confirm that indeed approaching 40 is not very high on my list or worries right now. It has been a weird fucking year for sure, and sometimes it feels like it was stolen (for all of us) in a lot of ways. Still, there were many magical moments and I’m so grateful for my family, amazing friendships new and old, the natural beauty of my county (can’t imagine what it’s like to experience lockdown in a cold and grey environment), and this incredible community that affords me the opportunity to have such a rewarding creative outlet and helps me retain my sanity. Pictured I am wearing a #morningsideshirt which, along with all my patterns will be on 25% sale for this week in ‘celebration’ of my birthday, as well as my new WIP shorts pattern which, along with 2 other patterns that I am working on, I am to release in March... hopefully 🤞🏽
If you think that you need an overlocker / serger to sew knits, then go check out the new tutorial by @handmade_by_celiahann .
I’m sewing up all the T-shirt’s today making Christmas presents for family and friends. Sewing T-shirt’s is actually one of my favourite things to do as they’re so quick and rewarding (and one gets so much wear out of them!). I batch cut a whole bunch of them and always find that listening to music while constructing them becomes quite a calming and meditative experience as I don’t really have to think too much about what I’m doing. I purchased this striped knit with the intention of making a t-shirt for my brother, but then wasn’t sure if it would be his taste, so I cut myself another @common_stitch #sparrowtee (with slightly raised neckline) and added it to my t-shirt stack. This morning I was spontaneously compelled to chop these @truebias #landerpants into #landershorts as I figured I would get more wear out of them, and I have zero regrets about this decision. I had the amazing opportunity to meet up with and hang out with Lauren of @she_thrives_and_sews yesterday. It’s always so surreal to meet someone in real life who you have established an online connection/ friendship with, and it was so rad to share some coffees with her and speak about sewing and our lives in general. I was reminded of the amazingness of this community, and the people of which it is comprised. I have been going through a patch or Instagram avoidance (to those of you that have DM’d me that I have not responded - there are quite a few of you, I do apologise, I will get back to you soon). The end of the year can be a little overwhelming sometimes I always feel, and the end of 2020 even more so than usual. I have been working on 3 patterns concomitantly the past few months and I will endeavour to push myself out of Instagram avoidance funk to share some more about these projects while I am on holiday, should you be interested ✂️
In case you missed it in my stories, @handmade_by_celiahann has dropped another super comprehensive video that will walk you through constructing #thebowerytop , and I am offering a 30% sale on this pattern for the next fortnight for those who may want to sew along with her in making this. She is also working on a video for this super-cute tie hack - swipe to see ( I have yet to sew this myself, but definitely will be doing so soon!) which she informs me will be released this month. That’s all for today as, in a surreal twist of 2020 I am off to see my brother who, miraculously, has come to visit from NYC... something that a few months ago I never would have believed to come true this year! 💫
