Hello strangers! I have made 2 more pairs of the wonderful #persephonepants by @annaallenclothing and I really am smitten with this pattern! I’m not convinced that I can pull off the silhouette and they can be tricky to style in winter, but I’m wearing them nonstop anyway. For my third pair I used a zip instead of buttons for the fly because I’m not sure that the button fly works with my post- twin paunch. This pair is made in a wool blend that I had in my stash which doesn’t take a press so was a b*tch to sew. I also had to unfortunately shorten the hem cause I didn’t have enough fabric. Day 13 #memademay2018. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mammas out there (it’s Mother’s Day here, but I’m not sure that it’s celebrated on the same date worldwide).i didn’t get to do anything ‘celebratory’ this Mother’s Day weekend so my treat to myself was some selfish/ non-work related sewing time. I have wanted to make this top for years (quite literally 4 years as the Burda magazine it is from is dated 4/2014 and we get it a month after release in South Africa). Four years ago I was (just) pregnant with twins and owned and ran a restaurant and was certainly not doing much sewing at all. Still, I never forgot the lines of this blouse and, when I first visualized the Calyer pants in my mind, I kind of always imagined them paired with this top, made in the same fabric. Throughout the design process of the Calyer pants I always knew this top was destined to be their outfit partner. I decided that, seeing as the pants are “finished”, I was long overdue to make this blouse. It did not disappoint- this top is the perfect Calyer companion. Day 12 of #memademay18 is pretty chilly and I’m dressed for comfort as I’m off to the park with my kids so I’m wearing these #burdastyle pleated pants that were my absolute faves until the Calyers came along. I actually especially wore these today because I’m sure that you’ve all had quite enough Calyer pants in my feed for a while! I actually still love these pants and I’m so glad I rediscovered them. Emo post alert! #memademay is probably the most anticipated event in the #sewist calendar, and I’m just as excited about it as everyone else is. May is a significant month for me for another reason too; in a few days it will be 2 years since opening this account and joining this community. If I look back to 24 months ago I was not in a great headspace, having spent many months in isolation as a single mom to 15 month old twins while my husband worked abroad. Motherhood was a very solitary (and sleep deprived) experience and despite making other Mom friends I found it really hard to relate sometimes to their ability to strap on 1 baby and pop our to the shops/ gym or to leave their kids with their husband and have some alone time. In addition to this, finances were super tight and i needed to get a job. I longed to work in a creative field but, despite applying to numerous vacancies (even offering to work for free at some of those that I really wanted, like at @woolworths_sa ) i received little, if any response. I didn’t really have a plan as such when I started my blog, I guess I just needed something for myself and affirmation that my interests/ passion still mattered, even if only to me. I felt extremely vulnerable putting myself out there initially, but I need not have as I was so quickly and warmly embraced by this community. I still had to pay the bills so I got a job in admin, but THIS is what keeps me up at night and gives me hope for a more creative future. The dress pictured is not a new pattern, but a really exciting project that I’m working on after being approached by a local company who found me on Instagram. Guys I even got offered a job in a creative field!
